OUR MISSION

GOING BEYOND JUST SERVING FOOD

At Turtle + The Wolf, we’ve spent the past nine years perfecting a dining experience that feels both exceptional and approachable. Born from a dream to create a family-friendly restaurant in our hometown of Montclair, we blend a cozy, “at home” atmosphere with thoughtful, seasonal dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. Our mission is simple: to offer great food in a space where guests feel welcomed, comfortable, and part of the family. Whether you’re here with loved ones or dining solo, we aim to make every visit feel personal and special.

CURATING AN EXPERIENCE

Our vision goes beyond just serving food—we’re committed to being a cornerstone of our community, a place where genuine connections are made and memories are created. From our legendary fried chicken to our rotating Berkshire pork specials, every dish reflects our dedication to quality, creativity, and the craft of cooking. At Turtle + The Wolf, we don’t just serve meals—we curate experiences that linger long after the last bite.

CURIOUS ABOUT OUR BACKGROUND?

Learn more about our origins straight from our founder along with some other key information.

  • It’s a frequently asked question. The simple answer is that the turtle and the wolf were two of the clan symbols for the Lenape Indians. As these were the indigenous people of the area that is now Montclair, I thought this was a cool way to give historical context to the restaurant and its location.

As I did further research, it became evident that the turtle and the wolf were indeed appropriate symbols for a restaurant. Diving down an existential rabbit hole, I learned that the turtle totem, among many things, symbolizes determination, persistence, and the ability to stay grounded in moments of chaos. This resonated with me since most professional kitchens hold a frenetic energy, bordering on insanity. The best chefs* around are those who can maintain their composure and stay on track when the wheels are falling off.

The wolf, as a spirit animal, represents instinct and an appetite for freedom. I feel that cooking is an instinctual, creative medium, as much of the food I’ve most enjoyed was prepared by not following a recipe. Being free to follow your instincts, driven by your senses, is, in my mind, what being a chef is about.

I also just thought it sounded cool.
